In April of 2007, Louisiana Tech entered its first prototype vehicle in the Shell Eco Marathon with its vehicle, the Blue Diamond. The vehicle achieved a fuel efficiency of 430 mpg. Since that point, we have continued to enter in a new vehicle every year, while improving fuel efficiency.

One of the main differences between the prototype category and the urban category is the fact that prototype is designed to get the most miles per gallon and not service as a road worthy vehicle. Our prototype vehicles generally only have 3 wheels and are as light as possible. Normal vehicle “luxuries” are not required for this class of vehicle, those being head lights, tail lights and padded seats.
